Real Estate Agents Experience Less Choice on Individual Insurance Market Under Obamacare

Last week, Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) issued a new report that does not bode well for real estate agents receiving health insurance through Obamacare. According to his report, competition and choice in Obamacare state exchanges continues to drop as the number of health insurance providers decreased in 2016.

Before Obamacare was implemented and essentially wiped out the individual health insurance market, individuals had nearly 400 insurers to choose from. Obamacare has since forced millions to purchase health insurance on Obamacare state exchanges, but these exchanges continue to see less choice and higher premiums.

In 2015, the total number of insurers on Obamacare exchanges dropped down to 307. Senator Sasse’s latest report shows an even lower number for 2016 at 289 insurers. Less choice and competition will lead to inevitably lead to higher prices for realtors receiving insurance on these exchanges. Congress must work to repeal Obamacare and restore a healthy individual market through patient-centered reforms.
